In the early hours of Saturday morning, February 17, in the Bronx, New York, a disagreement spiraled into a devastating altercation, leading to the death of 46-year-old Jesus Garcia-Desiderio.
The incident, fueled by a night of drinking and unresolved disputes, has left a family without a father, a wife without a husband, and a community in shock over the violence that unfolded near their homes.
Jesus Garcia-Desiderio, originally from Mexico City, had been living in the Bronx for over two decades, dedicating his life to his family and his work as a remodeling specialist with a particular focus on kitchens.
Married for nearly 20 years to Tamisha Velasquez, Garcia-Desiderio was a father to two sons, a hard-working individual, and an animal lover who took joy in rescuing pets.
His life in the Bronx was marked by his dreams of one day retiring back in Mexico, a wish that will now be honored posthumously as his family plans to send his body back for burial.
The events leading to Garcia-Desiderio’s untimely death began after a night out at the Excelente Gil Cafeteria Restaurant with his building superintendent and two others. According to law enforcement sources, an argument broke out, quickly escalating into physical violence, which according to the super was sparked by the victim. Garcia-Desiderio was knocked to the ground and suffered repeated blows to the head, leaving him with severe brain damage and a fractured jaw. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition, where he was placed on life support. Despite the efforts of medical staff, his condition deteriorated, and he was declared brain dead three days later.
The NYPD has yet to make any arrests in connection with the assault, which has now been deemed a homicide. The police investigation is ongoing, with reports suggesting that up to five individuals may have been involved in the brutal attack.
The lack of arrests has compounded the grief of Garcia-Desiderio’s family and friends, who are desperately seeking justice for their loved one.
Tamisha Velasquez, grappling with the loss of her husband, has been vocal about her anguish and the need for accountability. “I cannot control my emotions,” she stated, reflecting on the nightmare that unfolded over those three days at the hospital.
The family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support the repatriation of Garcia-Desiderio’s body to Mexico, in accordance with his wishes.
