Stolen Vehicle Chase Leads To Death of Two Teens

Two teenagers tragically lost their lives in an early morning accident on the Gulf Freeway in Houston, Texas, on January 12, 2024. The fatal incident occurred as police pursued a stolen vehicle.

The Houston Police Department (HPD) stated that the accident took place near 7590 South Loop West, in the proximity of South Interstate Highway 610 West, shortly before 1 a.m.

The Southeast patrol officers initially spotted the stolen car near the Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) and Park Place Boulevard.

Assistant Chief Kevin Deese of HPD stated that once dispatchers confirmed the car was stolen, officers attempted to stop it. However, the 19-year-old driver ignored the command and continued north on Broadway before entering the Gulf Freeway.

The pursuit came to a tragic end when the driver lost control, hit a barrier, and the vehicle rolled over multiple times.

Both the driver and a 16-year-old male passenger in the back left seat were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Houston Fire Department.

The identities of the deceased are currently being withheld pending notification of their families by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Two other passengers, an 18-year-old male in the front seat and a 16-year-old female in the rear right, miraculously survived the crash and were rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Assistant Chief Deese confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the accident. He added that the investigation is currently ongoing, with the high-speed nature of the incident being a significant factor under consideration.

The ramp where the accident happened was closed for several hours to allow for a thorough investigation.

The HPD’s policies regarding vehicle pursuits may face close examination as the investigation unfolds.

This incident is one of several recent crashes along the Gulf Freeway in Houston and League City, Texas, that have resulted in teenage fatalities. One such crash on August 8, 2023, claimed the life of a 17-year-old driver when his car hit light poles and split in half.

Similarly, a wrong-way crash on the Gulf Freeway in League City on January 6, 2024, killed two individuals, and another police chase in Houston on the same day ended with the deaths of two teenagers in a suspected stolen car.
