The Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil community is grappling with the shocking death of 30-year-old fitness trainer Débora “Debby” Michels.
Michels was found dead outside her parents’ home following a physical altercation with her husband, 48-year-old Alexander Gunsch.
On Friday, January 26, 2024, Michels’ body, shrouded in a red cloth, was discovered on the sidewalk near her family’s home.
A respected and beloved figure in the fitness community, Michels had been a personal trainer since 2011. She used social media platforms to share her fitness and gym knowledge, and her passion for bodybuilding led her to compete in several competitions.
Michels was employed at a local gym in Montenegro, where her vibrant personality and professional dedication were well-known.
According to local authorities, Gunsch admitted that during an argument, he physically assaulted Michels by lifting her up by the neck and throwing her against a piece of furniture, causing her fatal injuries.
He said that he had attempted to transport her to a hospital, but she died en route. In a state of panic, Gunsch disposed of her body outside of her parents’ home.
The police, who classified Michels’ death as a homicide, apprehended Gunsch on Sunday, January 28.
Michels’ family disclosed that they were unaware of any prior physical conflicts between the couple, who were amidst a separation.
Reports suggest that Michels had planned to move into a new apartment on Saturday, with her mother scheduled to assist her with the move.
Michels and Gunsch’s relationship began at Unisinos, a Jesuit university in southern Brazil, where they met while Michels was pursuing a degree in physical education. They later worked together at the same gym, where their relationship blossomed.
Michels’ father, Davi Rodrigues da Silva, aged 71, recalled his recent attempt to discuss their separation with Gunsch. He expressed his shock and despair over her death.
