New King and Queen Ascend Throne Amidst Scandal

After a reign of 52 years, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced her abdication, a historic move in the annals of the Danish monarchy. Her decision, conveyed during her 2023 New Year’s Eve address, marked the first voluntary abdication by a Danish monarch in nearly 900 years. Her abdication, effective from January 14, 2024, paved the way for Crown Prince Frederik, 55, to ascend the throne as King Frederik X.

Queen Margrethe II, 83, cited declining health and recent back surgery as key reasons for her decision to abdicate. Her reign saw Denmark evolve through significant global and national changes while maintaining the monarchy’s symbolic role in the nation’s cultural and political landscape.

Monarchs traditionally passed on their titles after death rather than abdication, especially during eras when monarchs held significant power. However, with the advent of constitutional monarchies and improved life expectancy, the symbolic duties of a monarch can become difficult in their later years. As an example, Queen Elizabeth II of Britain faithfully served for 70 years until her death in 2022 at the age of 96.

The ceremony of abdication, held at Christiansborg Palace, was a poignant moment for Denmark. It marked the transition of power from Queen Margrethe II to her son, now King Frederik X. This ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who praised Queen Margrethe for epitomizing the essence of Denmark through her lifelong dedication.

King Frederik X, ascending to the throne alongside his wife, Queen Mary, originally from Tasmania, Australia, brings a new dynamic to the Danish monarchy. Known for their approachability and often seen cycling around Copenhagen, the couple has endeared themselves to the public, earning the nickname “bicycling royals.” Their ascension represents not only a generational shift but also reflects the increasingly global nature of contemporary monarchies.

However, the lead-up to this historic succession was marred by scandal. In late 2023, Spanish tabloid Lecturas published photographs of Prince Frederik in Madrid with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova, igniting rumors of an affair. Both Frederik and Casanova have since denied these allegations, with the Danish royal family largely refraining from commenting directly on the matter. This scandal, despite its intense media coverage, did not impede the succession process, although it led to observable changes in the public demeanor of Prince Frederik and Princess Mary.

In 2022, Queen Margrethe made a significant decision to reduce the number of formal positions within the Royal Household. This led to the children of her second son, Prince Joachim, being stripped of their royal titles, relegating them to the counts and countess of Monpezat. This decision, not without its controversy, strained relationships within the royal family, culminating in Prince Joachim and his wife, Princess Marie, moving to the United States.

The Danish monarchy’s personal dynamics have also been in the public eye. Queen Margrethe’s marriage to French count and diplomat Henri Marie Jean Andre, later Prince Consort Henrick, was perceived as generally harmonious. However, Prince Consort Henrick’s public dissatisfaction with his title in his later years led to moments of public embarrassment. After his death in 2018, his ashes were divided, with a portion scattered in Danish waters and the remainder interred in a garden at a castle near Copenhagen.

King Frederik X and Queen Mary’s ascension to the throne signals a new chapter in the history of the Danish monarchy. As they navigate their roles under the scrutiny of a modern world, their reign is expected to reflect a blend of tradition and contemporary sensibilities. The Danish public, having bid farewell to a queen who was a constant presence for over half a century, now looks forward to the reign of King Frederik X and Queen Mary, symbolizing continuity amidst change in the royal lineage.
