On January 16, the remains of a missing student-athlete from The University of Massachusetts (UMass)-Dartmouth were discovered.
University officials confirmed the retrieval of the body of 21-year-old sophomore Flordan “Flo” Bazile from a Massachusetts river.
Bazile, a noteworthy track and field athlete at UMass, was discovered following exhaustive land and water search operations.
Bazile was last sighted at the university’s Pine Dale Hall dormitories at about 2 a.m. on the previous Monday.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, which has been significantly involved in the case, reported no evidence of criminal involvement in Bazile’s death, which is being considered a suicide.
Bazile’s remains were discovered in the Acushnet River, approximately seven miles away from his dorm at UMass-Dartmouth.
Mark Fuller, the Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, offered a statement recognizing Bazile’s contribution to the Charlton College of Business undergraduate program.
Fuller extended sympathies to Bazile’s family, friends, teammates, and classmates, and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to honoring and celebrating Bazile’s life on campus.
An exceptional sprinter, Bazile held the UMass Dartmouth record for the 100-yard dash.
Among his recent accomplishments, Bazile was honored as the 2024 Little East Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week and the Track and Field Rookie Athlete of the Week in successive weeks.
In 2022, he was also distinguished as the Little East Conference Rookie Track Athlete of the Year.
Bazile, originally from Orlando, Florida, attended high school in Massachusetts.
He is fondly remembered by his acquaintances as a diligent, energetic individual, an outstanding athlete, and a supportive friend.
