A high-speed pursuit that began in Coweta County, Georgia, and crossed into Chambers County, Alabama, resulted in the tragic death of Deputy Sheriff Eric Minix, 31, of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on Interstate 85 in the early morning hours of January 4, 2024.
Deputy Minix was participating in a multi-jurisdictional chase of a stolen vehicle when he was struck by a patrol car from the Lanett Police Department, Alabama, as he exited his vehicle. The officer involved in the collision, identified as Cornelius J. Robinson, has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation takes place.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is spearheading the investigation into the circumstances that precipitated the chase and the subsequent collision that led to Deputy Minix’s death. The motives behind the pursuit of the stolen vehicle, driven by Decedric Donson, 25, of Pensacola, Florida, are yet to be clarified.
The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of Deputy Minix, whom they described as a skilled K-9 officer, a quality deputy, and a congenial friend. Donson, the driver of the stolen vehicle, was eventually halted by stop sticks and arrested. He is facing charges related to the theft and evasion of law enforcement.
Deputy Minix is survived by his wife and three daughters, who are left to grieve his untimely passing.
