Late Wednesday, January 24, 2024, four officers of a municipal police force were slain in an ambush-style attack near Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico.
On Thursday, officials confirmed the incident, stating it occurred on a rural pathway not far from the city, in a region known for its turbulent security conditions.
The names of the deceased officers, all hailing from the Celaya city police force, have yet to be revealed.
As of now, the attackers remain unknown. The city of Celaya, located in the state of Guanajuato, is an established arena for violence and holds notoriety as one of Mexico’s most violent cities. This is primarily due to ongoing conflicts between the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco drug cartel. Guanajuato state, afflicted with the country’s highest homicide rate, stands as a stark representation of the widespread and severe violence in the region.
In the year 2023, Guanajuato recorded nearly 60 police officer deaths. This number, forming a significant part of the 412 police officers killed across the nation in 2023, underscores the dangerous environment in which law enforcement operates in the state.
The nationwide figure also indicates a 2% rise in police fatalities in comparison to the previous year, pointing to a concerning trend throughout Mexico.
In an unrelated but equally alarming event, authorities in Guerrero, a state in southern Mexico, discovered the bullet-riddled bodies of two state detectives on the outskirts of Taxco, a city known for its colonial allure and tourist appeal. This event contributes to the ongoing series of violent incidents that continue to destabilize various regions across Mexico.
The escalating violence in states such as Guanajuato is predominantly linked to the activities of criminal gangs and drug cartels, often engaged in deadly disputes over drug trafficking routes. In 2023, the state reported over 3,000 homicides, a shocking figure that highlights the gravity of its security crisis.
The widespread violence in Mexico traces its origins back to the federal government’s contentious military offensive against drug cartels that started in December 2006. Since then, the country has been trapped in a cycle of drug-related violence, leading to over 420,000 murders, according to official data.
