In a startling case in São José, Brazil, Norma Silveira da Silva, aged 90, was wrongly pronounced dead, only to be later discovered alive inside a body bag at a morgue. This incident was revealed on November 25, 2023, mere hours following her declared death at São José Regional Hospital.
Da Silva was hospitalized on November 24, 2023, for what was presumed to be liver-related health issues. Her friend and caregiver, Jessica Martins Silvi Pereira, reported that although da Silva was unresponsive during a visit, she managed to open an eye.
Her family was informed of her passing later that evening, with a urinary tract infection listed as the cause on the initial death certificate.
Da Silva, after spending almost two hours in a body bag, was found to be alive, narrowly escaping suffocation. Her discovery came when a crematorium worker, who arrived at around 1:30 a.m. to collect her body, noticed that she was still warm and did not exhibit rigor mortis, indicating she was still alive.
She was immediately returned to the hospital. Tragically, she was declared dead again early on Monday morning, with her second death certificate listing septic shock as the cause.
The erroneous declaration of da Silva’s death has sparked major concerns about the hospital’s operational procedures and oversight. Da Silva’s family is considering legal action against the hospital for this oversight. Pereira, her caregiver, pointed to this incident as a stark reminder of the necessity for rigorous medical checks to prevent such catastrophic errors.
An ongoing investigation is delving into whether da Silva’s premature placement in the morgue contributed to her eventual death, highlighting the critical implications of such errors in medical practice.
