On September 30, 2023, the Sangamon County Juvenile Detention Center in Springfield, Illinois, was the scene of an altercation involving an armed teenager and responding law enforcement. The episode, which ended fatally, involved 17-year-old Camren Darden, an inmate at the facility.
The incident began when Darden, armed with a handgun, began firing the weapon within the detention center. He then took a female inmate hostage.
Springfield Police Department (SPD) officers responded to the emergency call from detention center guards who, due to state regulations, are not permitted to carry firearms. The police arrival was captured on both security and body camera footage, released on December 7th.
As detailed in the released footage, SPD officers, one of whom was equipped with an assault-style rifle, confronted Darden as he emerged from the facility’s front door with his hostage. In the ensuing interaction, Darden was shot multiple times by an officer, causing Darden to drop his firearm. Despite his injuries, he attempted to retrieve his weapon but was shot again. The video captures him eventually raising his hands in surrender.
Following the shooting, both Darden and the hostage were immediately transported to HSHS St. John’s Hospital. Darden was pronounced dead at 9:41 p.m. The hostage was treated and subsequently released.
In the aftermath of the shooting, all juveniles were transferred out of the Sangamon County Juvenile Center, and the facility has not received new juvenile inmates since. The SPD officers involved in the shooting were cleared of wrongdoing by the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office. They remain off duty, however, pending the ongoing investigation.
The Illinois State Police took over the investigation of the incident. Questions have arisen regarding how Darden gained access to a firearm within the detention center, and this aspect remains a key focus of the inquiry.
Police Chief Ken Scarlette, in a statement, referred to the actions of the officers as “heroic,” emphasizing the danger and rapid decision-making inherent in law enforcement. The release of the video footage, which included surveillance cameras, police body cameras, and 911 audio, was a step toward transparency, according to authorities.
