A fatal shooting at Paddock Mall in Ocala, Florida on December 23, 2023, has left one man dead and another person injured. The incident, which occurred around 3:40 p.m., led to a widespread law enforcement response.
The victim, 40-year-old David Nathaniel Barron, was found deceased at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds. In addition, a woman suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her leg and was hospitalized. The panic during the shooting also led to a person experiencing chest pain and another sustaining a broken arm.
The Ocala Police Department, under the leadership of Chief Mike Balken, immediately responded to reports of gunfire. The shooting, which took place in a common area of the mall, is believed to be a targeted act of violence.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 39-year-old Albert J. Shell Jr., wanted on charges of premeditated first-degree murder and attempted premeditated first-degree murder. Shell was last seen wearing black pants, a hoodie, and a black mask. Despite extensive efforts, he remains at large. The police have recovered a firearm at the scene, believed to be used in the shooting.
Paddock Mall, featuring major retailers such as J.C. Penney and Foot Locker, was evacuated and closed following the incident. The mall is owned by Washington Prime Group (WPG), who are yet to comment on the mall’s security measures in response to the shooting.
