In a tragic incident on December 2, 2023, a 26-year-old woman, Maria Fernandez Martinez Jimenez, died following a shark attack at Melaque Beach, located west of Manzanillo, Mexico.
Jimenez was swimming with her daughter, aged five, in a coastal aquatic park when the shark attacked. According to witnesses, the shark bit her upper leg as she neared a play platform about 75 feet from the beach. In a brave act, Jimenez placed her daughter on the platform, who escaped without any injuries.
The attack drew immediate assistance from beach visitors and local authorities. Despite their efforts and rapid response, Jimenez succumbed to her injuries, primarily due to the excessive blood loss from a massive bite near her hip, which resulted in her leg being completely severed.
Social media later featured a video from the incident, showing the aftermath of the shark attack at Melaque Beach. Jimenez is seen lying on the beach after being rescued from the Pacific Ocean.
In response, local officials closed beaches in Melaque and Barra de Navidad and advised caution. The University of Guadalajara, where Jimenez studied marine biology, extended its condolences, citing her connection with marine life.
Shark attacks are unusual in Mexico, but a 2019 incident involved an American diver who survived a shark bite on the arm in Magdalena Bay, Baja California Sur.
