Erie News Now anchor and reporter Emily Matson, aged 42, passed away, as confirmed by her parent company on December 11. The Erie County Coroner’s Office determined that her death was due to suicide, occurring after she was struck by a train.
Matson, known for her commitment to journalistic integrity, had a strong connection to the Erie community. Her career began with an internship at WJET-TV in Erie in the early 2000s. Her capabilities quickly led her to a producer position at WICU and later to on-air reporting, particularly covering crime.
Matson’s work in journalism was recognized multiple times, including two Outstanding Spot News Awards from the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters.
She co-anchored the nightly news on WICU at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Beyond her professional achievements, Matson was appreciated for her engaging, friendly broadcasting style. She was noted for her radiant smile and approachable demeanor, positively influencing the daily news experience. In the newsroom, she was seen as a passionate advocate for Erie and Northwest Pennsylvania.
Matson’s final broadcast took place on the Friday before her death. Lilly Broadcasting and her station publicly shared their deep sorrow and extended condolences to Matson’s family, including her husband, Ryan.
