In April 2022, a high-profile altercation occurred on a JetBlue flight from San Francisco to Florida involving former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson and a passenger named Melvin Townsend. A widely viewed video of the confrontation shows Tyson assaulting Townsend.
Following the incident, Townsend, through his legal representation, issued a pre-litigation settlement demand on November 28, 2023, to Tyson’s attorneys. Through his lawyer, Jake Jondle, he is demanding $450,000 from Tyson.
In the settlement demand letter, he claims he suffered a severe headache, neck pain, loss of employment, and ongoing medical issues requiring therapy as a result of the assault. His lawyer argued that Tyson, 57, could have chosen alternatives to violence and highlighted his subsequent public acknowledgment of his wrongful actions.
However, Tyson’s legal team has refused this demand, labeling it as a “shakedown.” They maintain that Townsend was the provocateur in the incident. Notably, authorities did not press charges against him following the altercation.
Townsend’s account of the events leading up to the incident contrasts sharply with Tyson’s version. According to him, he was merely an excited fan engaging Tyson in conversation about marijuana and mushrooms. On the other hand, Tyson’s camp argues that Townsend’s behavior was provocative and inappropriate. Townsend repeatedly tried to engage Tyson in conversation and Tyson asked to be left alone. Townsend also is said to have thrown a water bottle at the boxer.
Melvin Townsend has a criminal record and has spent time in prison for, among other charges, grand theft, fraud, trafficking in stolen property, and burglary. Mike Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992 and was in prison for three years of a six-year sentence.
