Evan Ellingson, formerly seen in “My Sister’s Keeper” and “CSI: Miami,” passed away at age 35 in Fontana, California.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported Ellingson died from an accidental fentanyl overdose on November 5, 2023, in a sober living home in California, a residence for those recovering from addiction.
Ellingson’s family announced posthumously that he had been sober for three years, with a relapse following an opioid prescription for dental work.
Originally from La Verne, California, Ellingson began his acting career as a child star, rising to fame in the 1990s with notable appearances in “Mad TV” and “Titus.” His portrayal of Brian Dalton in the 2009 film “My Sister’s Keeper” stands out as a significant milestone in his career. He retired from acting in 2010, amidst various personal challenges.
Ellingson’s life after acting was marred by struggles with drug abuse, a problem that began following the tragic heroin overdose of his older brother, an event that profoundly impacted him and led to his initial drug use at the age of 19.
In a valiant effort to turn his life around, Ellingson sought treatment in 2021 at River’s Edge Ranch, a rehabilitation center in California.
Despite these personal battles, Ellingson was highly regarded in the entertainment industry. His co-star in “My Sister’s Keeper,” Abigail Breslin, reminisced about Ellingson on Instagram, praising his immense talent and kindness.
Ellingson’s journey into acting was an unexpected one, beginning at a skate park, which led to a commercial for Vans Company. His career included roles in “Complete Savages,” “24,” and “Letters from Iwo Jima,” with his final appearance in “CSI: Miami.”
Ellingson is survived by his family, including three brothers, who continue to live in California.
