A former lawyer from Boca Raton, Florida, who was accused of killing his father at their shared law firm’s office, committed suicide in jail while awaiting his trial.
On November 15, 2023, Brandon Labiner, 34, was discovered dead in the Palm Beach County jail, less than a month after his indictment for the murder of his father, Paul Labiner, also a lawyer.
Brandon, facing first-degree murder charges for the July incident, was scheduled for his next court appearance on November 28. His death, confirmed as an apparent suicide by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, follows a year of legal and personal turmoil, including being suspended from practicing law by the Florida Supreme Court after accusations of stealing close to $450,000 from a family trust fund. This dispute escalated to Paul Labiner filing a lawsuit and a bar complaint against his son.
The murder, which occurred on July 1, 2023, was captured on surveillance footage outside the elder Labiner’s law office. The footage shows Brandon arriving at the parking garage on a bicycle, removing a box from a bag, and pulling out what appeared to be a gun. He then confronted his father, shooting him in the head, upper chest, and twice in the lower body. The deceased was found lying in a pool of blood outside his law office.
At his arrest, Brandon Labiner was already facing personal issues, including the recent death of his unborn child and a divorce. The arrest affidavit cited these personal tragedies, along with the contentious relationship with his father and the ongoing legal dispute, as potential motives for the murder.
If found guilty, Brandon Labiner would have faced either life imprisonment without the chance of parole or the death penalty. He also faced charges of tampering and fabricating physical evidence, a third-degree felony, with a potential sentence of up to five years and a $5,000 fine.
Valentin Rodriguez, Labiner’s public defender, lamented the death of his client, reflecting on the string of tragedies that have afflicted the Labiner family.
