Andre Braugher, an esteemed American actor recognized for his diverse roles in television and film, passed away on December 11, 2023, at the age of 61. His death from lung cancer, confirmed by his publicist Jennifer Allen, came after a diagnosis a few months ago.
Born on July 1, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois, Braugher embarked on his artistic journey at Stanford University, California, on a theater scholarship, later graduating from The Juilliard School in New York in 1988.
His career breakthrough came with the 1989 film “Glory.” Braugher gained critical success as Detective Frank Pembleton in “Homicide: Life on the Street” (1993-1999), winning an Emmy for this role.
His role as Captain Raymond Holt in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” brought him four Emmy nominations. His three-decade career spanned films like “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” “Salt,” and television appearances including “Law & Order: SVU.”
Braugher’s marriage to actress Ami Brabson, whom he met on “Homicide: Life on the Street,” was a highlight of his personal life. The couple had three sons: Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley.
At the time of his death, Braugher was preparing to star in Netflix’s “The Residence,” playing A.B. Wynter. The show’s production has been paused due to his passing.
