A shooting at the New Hampshire State Hospital, a psychiatric care facility in Concord, on November 17, 2023, left two people dead, including a security guard and the shooter.
John Madore, 33, armed with a pistol and having additional firearms in his vehicle, fatally shot Bradley Haas, 63, a security guard and former police chief, in the hospital lobby.
A state trooper, who was patrolling the hospital grounds, responded promptly and shot Madore, resulting in his death. The actions of Haas and the state trooper were later praised for their effectiveness in preventing further loss of life.
No direct links between Madore and the hospital staff were established at the time of the incident. The hospital, which treats mental health patients, was secured by state police. The incident occurred while 185 people were on the premises, but no patients were injured.
The shooting has raised questions about security in healthcare facilities, particularly those catering to mentally ill patients. The New Hampshire State Hospital employs strict security measures, including metal detectors for visitors.
Governor Chris Sununu commended the rapid response of first responders and law enforcement officers.
The hospital continued its operations following the incident but limited visitor access for the evening. Investigations are underway to determine Madore’s motives and background.
