A Bonita Springs, Florida, couple is facing charges of child neglect and drug possession after their 14-month-old child was found unresponsive due to a cocaine overdose.
On October 29, 2023, deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a medical distress call about an unresponsive toddler at the home of Diego Tzoy Pu, 33, and Santa Lux Pu De Tzoy, 30. The couple told law enforcement officials that the baby had consumed several oxycodone pills. Tests on these pills revealed that they contained cocaine.
The pills had been stored in Tzoy Pu’s wallet, which had been left within the child’s reach on a bedside table. The parents observed the child with a blue pill in her mouth, and the child was visually distressed.
The toddler was transported to a local hospital and administered Narcan. Thankfully, she survived and is currently in stable condition.
Sheriff Carmine Marceno of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office expressed relief over the child’s condition and stressed the importance of protecting those who cannot fend for themselves. However, he refrained from providing extensive comments on the ongoing investigation.
A police search of the parents revealed a baggie of pills in Diego’s possession that also tested positive for cocaine. Both parents are now in custody, held at the Lee County Jail as they await further legal proceedings.
In addition to the charges faced by the couple, the Florida Department of Children and Families has initiated a separate investigation into the child’s safety and well-being, and will determine her placement
The girl’s parents posted bond and are currently free.
