Respected Senior Couple Murdered by Man in the Woods

In April 2022, an unsettling event took place in Concord, New Hampshire. A senior couple, Stephen Reid, 67, and Djeswende ‘Wendy’ Reid, 66, were shot and killed on a trail close to their residence.

Known in the community for their generous humanitarian deeds, the Reids were walking close to their property when the tragedy unfolded. Their lifeless bodies were later located in the forest, hidden under natural debris. The police started a comprehensive investigation upon this discovery.

At the beginning of the inquiry, the police spoke to a man claiming to be “Arthur Kelly.” He was soon identified as Logan Clegg, a 27-year-old who had set up camp near the Reids’ property for several months. His many Mountain Dew cans earned him the nickname “Mountain Dew Man.” Feeling the heat of the investigation, Clegg burned his campsite and tried to flee New Hampshire.

The authorities, using both old-school methods and technology, followed Clegg’s trail. His purchase history and cell phone signals led them to a library in South Burlington, Vermont. He was arrested there on October 12, 2022. He had a one-way ticket to Berlin, Germany, a false ID, and a gun when arrested.

At his trial, there was strong evidence against Clegg. The bullets found at the scene of the Reids’ death matched the firearm in Clegg’s backpack.

But Clegg’s defense had counterarguments. They claimed the bullet tests weren’t clear. They also said Clegg was running away because of past crimes in Utah and not because of the double murder.

Clegg’s past criminal activities shed light on his character. He was linked to offenses in multiple states. In Spokane, Washington, in 2018, he was part of a death ruled as self-defense, and he faced no charges. Also, in Utah he was arrested for stealing from a store and had talked about his strong feelings against being locked up.

After deliberating for two days, on October 23, 2023, the jury decided Clegg was guilty of all charges. The decision brought some comfort to the grieving Reid family. The couple’s son expressed his relief and the hope that his parents’ good works would be remembered.

Clegg is waiting for his sentencing, set for December 15. He’s being held at the Merrimack County Superior Court in Concord, New Hampshire, without bail.
