A small, single-engine Mooney M20 airplane met a disastrous end in Plano, Texas, on November 22, 2023, when it crashed into a parking lot adjacent to a bustling shopping center.
The accident, occurring around 6 pm, resulted in the death of the pilot, identified as Monroe (Elzie) McDonald from Arizona, the only one aboard the aircraft. McDonald, 87, was flying to Dallas for Thanksgiving with his family.
Situated near Air Park-Dallas Airport, less than half a mile away, the crash site was close to popular local businesses, including Mama’s Daughters’ Diner and Nail Addiction, located in Plano’s Midway Park neighborhood, about 20 miles north of Dallas.
Despite the severity of the crash, which led to the engulfment of the plane in flames and subsequently setting a nearby parked car on fire, there were no additional injuries reported.
Witnesses at the scene said that the aircraft took a sharp nosedive before its landing in the parking lot. The plane did not collide with structures upon impact, possibly averting a larger-scale calamity. However, the fire that ensued from the crash engulfed the aircraft and spread to a nearby vehicle, fortunately unoccupied at the time.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, and local police confirmed the pilot’s death at the crash site.
Despite the proximity to the airport and the clear visibility at the time, the exact reasons leading up to the accident are still under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.
As investigations continue, the aviation community and local authorities are working closely to understand the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
