Four officials, presently and formerly associated with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, were declared dead within 24 hours, sparking concerns and raising questions within the law enforcement community.
The tragic events occurred on November 6, 2023, and November 7, 2023, and are being investigated as apparent suicides.
On November 6, Commander Darren Harris, 56, with 25 years of service, was found dead at his home in Santa Clarita, California. On the same day, Greg Hovland, a 67-year-old retired deputy, was found dead in Quartz Hill.
That day also saw the death of Corina Thompson, 59, a custody assistant, found in Stevenson Ranch. The following day, November 7, a sheriff’s deputy, stationed in a jail, was found unresponsive in Pomona, California, and later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Sheriff Robert Luna of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department expressed the department’s deep sorrow over these losses. Investigations into these deaths are ongoing, with no established connections between them so far.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, along with other agencies, is investigating these deaths. The department’s focus is on supporting the families of the deceased and providing assistance to officers within the department affected by these tragedies.
