A four-year-old boy’s life was tragically cut short in north Spokane, Washington, when he was attacked by his family’s dog on the evening of Halloween.
The incident was reported by the Spokane Police Department to have occurred around 8 p.m. within the family residence near the junction of N. Nevada St. and E. Walton Ave.
Officers who arrived at the distressing scene discovered the boy suffering from catastrophic injuries inflicted by the dog. They, along with emergency service personnel, attempted life-saving measures. Despite their best efforts, the boy was pronounced dead.
The dire situation began when the child’s grandfather sought help from neighbors. Roger Hammers, a nurse living nearby, responded to the call and found himself amidst a heartbreaking scene; the grandmother was holding the boy, his body marked by blood, as she attempted to stop the bleeding. Neighbors Hammers and his girlfriend witnessed the scene and called 911, seeking immediate assistance. The boy was transported to a hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The dog, identified as a pit bull mix, was also found to be severely injured as family members had tried to protect the young boy during the attack. Due to the severity of its injuries, law enforcement officers euthanized the dog at the scene.
It was made clear by the Spokane Police that this tragic event was unrelated to Halloween trick-or-treating activities. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, the identity of the child and further familial information have not been disclosed to the public.
