The city of Los Angeles, California, was struck with tragic news on October 28, 2023, upon the discovery of 54-year-old television star Matthew Perry deceased in the hot tub at his Pacific Palisades home.
When Perry’s assistant returned from running errands, Perry was found lifeless in the water. Attempts at resuscitation through CPR could not bring him back.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene worked diligently but were unable to revive Perry, who was pronounced dead at his home. The official cause of death is on hold, pending the toxicology reports from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s autopsy.
The LAPD has quickly clarified that there is no evidence of criminal activity related to Perry’s death. Although no illegal substances were found, prescription medications recovered at Perry’s residence are being investigated as part of the case.
Perry was open about his personal challenges with addiction, particularly to opioids and alcohol, and had been vocal about the significant costs associated with his recovery process.
A mere five days before his death, Perry posted a photo on Instagram, showing him lounging in water, a haunting prelude to his death.
In light of Perry’s death, there has been an increased awareness about the dangers of hot tubs, particularly when they involve high temperatures, the consumption of alcohol, or certain medications, or when conditions like hot tub syncope are present.
Matthew Perry’s legacy is marked by his endearing portrayal of Chandler Bing on the hit TV show “Friends”, among other roles, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of pop culture.
