On Sunday morning, November 26, 2023, a family of three, including a five-year-old child, were found fatally stabbed in their Bronx, New York City apartment.
At about 6:40 a.m., police responded to a 911 call at 674 East 136th Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 38-year-old Jonathan Rivera with fatal stab wounds in the building’s first-floor hallway.
Further investigation led to the discovery of Rivera’s son, five-year-old Kayden Rivera, and 33-year-old Hanoi Peralta, also fatally wounded, inside their nearby apartment.
The family was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services. The incident is being investigated in what appears to be a triple homicide. As of now, no suspects have been identified, and the New York Police Department (NYPD) has indicated that the investigation is ongoing.
Eyewitness accounts and security footage provided additional context to the tragedy. Dahan Ali, the owner of Neighborhood Grocery, a bodega close to the Rivera-Peralta home, recounted seeing Peralta casually shopping on Saturday afternoon, mere hours before the murders. Ali described the family as regular customers, emphasizing their pleasant nature and daily routine, which included young Kayden’s school trips and Jonathan’s morning coffee visits.
The family, who had recently moved into the apartment previously occupied by the building’s superintendent, was described by neighbors as quiet and reserved.
Akakpo Kodjogan, a long-time resident of the building, expressed shock and concern over the changing dynamics in what was once considered a safe and stable environment. Other residents, echoing similar sentiments, highlighted the family’s discreet presence and the absence of any noticeable disturbances.
The city’s medical examiner is conducting autopsies to determine the official causes of death.
