Suzanne Shepherd, renowned for her roles in “Goodfellas” and “The Sopranos,” passed away at the age of 89.
Shepherd, a distinguished actress in Hollywood, died in her sleep at her New York City home on Friday, November 17. Her daughter, Kate Shepherd, disclosed that Suzanne had been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and had weakened considerably in her final days. The specific cause of her passing has not been revealed.
Shepherd began her acting career in 1988 with a role in “Mystic Pizza,” starring Julia Roberts. She quickly gained recognition for her ability to portray complex, often commanding maternal characters.
In Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas,” she played the mother of Lorraine Bracco’s character. Her role in “The Sopranos” as Mary DeAngelis, mother to Carmela Soprano, portrayed by Edie Falco, further enhanced her status as a skilled character actress.
Over the course of her career, Shepherd took on a wide range of roles in both film and television. Her film work included appearances in “Uncle Buck,” “Lolita,” and “Requiem for a Dream,” and she appeared in television series such as “Law & Order” and “Blue Bloods.” Among her recent projects was a role in the Netflix comedy “The Week Of.”
Apart from her on-screen work, Shepherd had a profound commitment to teaching acting, spanning over four decades. She taught at prestigious institutions including the Trinity Square Conservatory, Hartman Conservatory, the Berghof Studio, and her own studio in New York City.
