On Sunday, November 19, 2023, a family of four was found dead in their Lorain, Ohio, home in what authorities are treating as a murder-suicide.
The deceased include Tyler Young, 29; his wife Skylar Young, 24; their four-month-old son Bandin Young; and Skylar’s nine-year-old daughter Angel Isaac.
Officers responded to the family’s East 9th Street apartment around 10 a.m. following reports of dogs running loose in the neighborhood.
Upon arrival, police found the apartment door open with the bodies of two adults and two young children. Tyler Young was found deceased with a gunshot wound to the head and a 9mm pistol next to him, suggesting self-infliction.
Lieutenant Jacob Morris of the Lorain Police Department said that they are treating the case as a suspected triple murder-suicide. This stems from the evidence gathered at the scene, indicating that Tyler Young was responsible for the deaths of his family members before ending his own life.
Police records show that in May, Skylar Young had accused her husband, Tyler, of physical abuse, including strangulation, while she was 26 weeks pregnant with their son, Bandin.
Tyler Young was arrested following these allegations. Skylar later recanted her statement, leading to a Lorain County grand jury’s decision not to indict Tyler Young. Skylar alleged that her initial accusation might have been a flashback from a prior incident rather than a current one.
Tyler Young’s mental health struggles were also highlighted. His aunt, Lisa Costello, revealed that he had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia about ten years ago. Despite attempts by the family to help him over the years, Tyler refused to take medication for his condition. She described him as “fighting demons in his mind.”
She also mentioned that Tyler’s grandmother visited the apartment the night before the killings to drop off soup. Angel Isaac, the nine-year-old stepdaughter of Tyler Young, had just celebrated her ninth birthday the day before the incident.
Besides the 9mm pistol used in the murder-suicide, police found two additional guns in the home.
