A 16-year-old Chisholm Trail High School student unexpectedly collapsed and later died after finishing a 5K run at a district track meet in Haltom City, Tarrant County, Texas, on October 13, 2023.
After completing the race, witnesses reported seeing Angel Hernandez fall just past the finish line.
Friends quickly came to his aid, helping him towards a nearby water fountain. However, Hernandez collapsed once more. He was immediately taken to a local hospital, where he died about an hour later.
Brent Brevard, Hernandez’s former coach at Chisholm Trail High School in Fort Worth, described him as an exemplary student and athlete. “He worked hard and cared about his teammates. He also prioritized his studies.”
Hernandez’s death has left many questions, as friends and family search for answers about what might have caused the sudden collapse, especially since he had just broken his personal best time.
Apart from his commitment to track and field, Hernandez had a strong interest in martial arts, participating in many competitions nationwide. Ashley Wood, his karate coach, remembered him fondly. She said, “He had a unique personality that drew people to him. He always wore a smile. Knowing how many people remembered him during the moment of silence confirms how loved he was.”
To support Hernandez’s family with the expenses for his funeral, Wood set up a GoFundMe campaign. “It’s tough. We’ll always remember him and he’ll always have a special place in our hearts,” she added.
A remembrance ceremony for Hernandez took place at Chisholm Trail High School’s homecoming football game. The school and its community observed a moment of silence in his honor.
Angel Hernandez’s funeral was held on Friday. During the service, his family received a varsity letter jacket in his memory.
He is survived by his parents, Antonio and Elsie Hernandez, and a younger brother named Mark Hernandez.
