On August 28, 2023, a shooting incident took place in a science lab on the North Carolina campus of UNC-Chapel Hill, leading to a faculty member’s death.
Upon investigation, Zijie Yan, an Associate Professor affiliated with the Department of Applied Physical Sciences, was found in his office bearing seven gunshot wounds. As per the subsequent autopsy, injuries were identified on his head, face, neck, left arm, chest, and abdomen. Additional minor injuries were evident on his right upper arm, left hand, and left forearm. The scene also presented nine distinct shell casings.
Facing charges related to the incident is Tailei Qi, a 34-year-old enrolled as a graduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill. It was identified that Yan had been guiding Qi in an academic capacity as his faculty adviser.
Prompted by the event, the entire UNC campus was placed on lockdown and notifications were circulated about a potential threat in the area. In a show of solidarity, students organized on campus, underscoring the need for reinforced gun safety and also taking a pause to commemorate Yan.
Chancellor Guskiewicz shared a message with the campus community, highlighting Yan’s invaluable contributions. Although the case remains active, it has been specified that the district attorney will not seek the death penalty for Qi. The exact cause for the event remains undisclosed.
