Pilot Tries to Shut Down Engine During Flight

On Sunday, October 22, 2023 an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot allegedly tried to crash a plane by attempting to shut down its engines. This action caused the plane to be quickly rerouted to Portland, Oregon.

Joseph David Emerson, 44, occupied the cockpit’s jump seat in the cockpit during the flight. Preliminary reports indicate that Emerson tried to disrupt the operation of the engines, prompting immediate action from the onboard flight crew.

According to a federal complaint, Emerson told the crew that he was having a nervous breakdown and should be subdued.

The captain and first officer quickly responded, ensuring engine power was not lost. Their efforts, combined with the diligence of the entire flight crew, ensured the safety of the 80 passengers and four crew members onboard. The flight eventually made a secure landing in Portland without any injuries.

After the incident in the cockpit, Emerson was moved to the back of the aircraft, but he attempted to open the emergency exit during the descent of the flight, according to a release from the US attorney’s office.

Upon landing, Emerson was arrested by the Port of Portland Police. He now faces serious charges, including 83 counts of attempted murder, 83 counts of reckless endangerment, and one felony count of endangering an aircraft. This information was further corroborated by additional sources, including audio from the plane’s communication with air traffic control that detailed Emerson’s attempt to turn off the engines.

According to an affidavit, when interviewed by an FBI officer, Emerson said he had been depressed and talked about taking psychedelic mushrooms. The FBI said it is investigating whether the pilot was under the influence of drugs during the incident.

Passengers onboard were initially unaware of the gravity of the situation. Passenger Aubrey Gavello recalled hearing a flight attendant announce an emergency and a need for an immediate landing. About 15 minutes later, the reason was stated as a “medical emergency.” Another passenger, Alex Wood, mentioned that they were informed of a “disturbance in the cockpit.” Once safely on the ground, Wood observed the police escorting a handcuffed person, identified as the suspect Emerson, off the plane.

Other investigations into Emerson have revealed puzzling contrasts between his alleged actions and his known background. Residents of Pleasant Hill, California, where Emerson resides, expressed their shock. Known to be good with children, married and having two young sons himself, the act seems out of character for the pilot.

The Federal Aviation Administration has commented on the incident, emphasizing that it is not linked to current world events.

The Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, has praised the flight crew and air traffic controllers for their quick and professional response, ensuring the safety of all onboard.

The incident is under investigation by several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, who have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat related to this event.

The pilot’s union, Air Line Pilots Association, International, also commended the crew’s actions.
