In the early hours of October 1, 2023, a fire engulfed the Fonda nightclub in the southeastern Spanish city of Murcia. The blaze quickly spread to two adjoining clubs, the Teatre and Golden. The tragedy, as reported by Mayor José Ballesta of Murcia, claimed the lives of 13 individuals.
Officials suspect that the fire originated on the first floor of the Fonda nightclub around 6 am. Following an investigation by emergency services, multiple victims were discovered at this location. First responders, facing significant obstacles such as the collapse of the nightclub’s roof, as shared by Diego Seral, spokesperson for Spain’s National Police, worked diligently to combat the fierce flames. Distressing footage circulated online, displaying the immense fire and thick smoke billowing from the club’s windows.
A swift and comprehensive response was coordinated, involving nearly 40 firefighters and 12 fire trucks. These individuals worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire and rescue any potential survivors. The clubs were hosting various birthday celebrations at the time.
A survivor, who wished to remain anonymous, described their narrow escape from the blaze, describing their departure just moments before the alarms sounded and the power was cut off. Expressing deep concern for their missing family members and friends, they emphasized their hope to find them.
In the wake of this devastating incident, Mayor José Ballesta declared a three-day period of mourning for the city of Murcia. As a symbol of respect, the flags at Murcia’s City Hall were lowered to half-mast. The city mourns the loss of lives, and ongoing investigations aim to determine the causes of this tragic fire.
