LEWISTON, Maine – Following the tragic mass shooting on October 25, 2023 that left 18 people dead in Lewiston, Maine, the suspected shooter, 40-year-old Robert Card, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities located Card’s body at a recycling center in Lisbon, Maine. Notably, the recycling facility had been combed twice by police prior to the discovery of Card’s remains. However, the investigators were not initially aware of an overflow parking area across the street, which is where Card’s body was eventually found.

Prior to his death, Card left a note in his residence addressed to a close family member. The contents of the note, although not revealing a clear motive for the shooting, provided phone passcodes, bank account details, and other pertinent information. Law enforcement officials are now working diligently to access Card’s phone and bank records using search warrants.

Card was previously employed as a commercial driver by Maine Recycling Corporation for approximately one year, linking his professional background to the location where his body was discovered.

In addition to the note found at Card’s residence, officials uncovered three firearms, one of which was a long gun retrieved from Card’s white Subaru vehicle. The vehicle itself was found near a boat launch.

Card, who served as an Army reservist, had military training and was also known to be a certified firearms instructor. Despite his military and professional experience with firearms, there were reports that his behavior had raised concerns in recent months, leading up to the mass shooting.

The series of events had a deep impact on the Lewiston community, prompting a city-wide manhunt and sparking reactions from both residents and officials. As local and federal law enforcement agencies in Maine came together in a collaborative effort, the search for Card intensified, drawing nationwide attention.

Following the tragic incident, police released photos of Card in an attempt to aid their search. The first three individuals to positively identify Card from the photos were reportedly family members.

Details about the victims of the Lewiston shooting, their stories, and testimonies from friends and family have been emerging, painting a heart-wrenching picture of the tragedy’s vast impact.

As investigators continue to piece together the timeline of the shooting, the discovery of Card’s note and his final resting place have only added to the complex puzzle. While some information has been unveiled, many questions about Card’s motive and the events leading up to the mass shooting remain unanswered. Law enforcement officials urge anyone with information to come forward as they work tirelessly to bring clarity and closure to this devastating event.
