On September 29, 2023, firefighters responding to a grass fire in an upscale Austin suburb made a disturbing discovery. Around 5 a.m., by the junction of Mesa Drive and Cat Mountain Drive, a woman’s body was discovered engulfed in flames.
The victim was identified as 33-year-old Melissa Davis.
Davis, with a master’s from the University of North Texas, had a pronounced interest in experiencing varied cultures and enjoyed outdoor activities. During many of her adventures, she was accompanied by her dog Dudley.
The site yielded several notable items: a lighter, a detectable aroma indicating the use of a fire accelerant, and a butcher knife which is speculated to have a connection to the incident.
Subsequent autopsy procedures determined that Davis was set on fire while still alive.
It was later noted that her phone, as well as her 2016 blue Toyota 4Runner, were missing. Information from her family pinpointed her last known agenda as a visit to an Apple store.
In their endeavor to understand the circumstances of Davis’s demise, the Austin Police Department is probing into it as a deliberate murder. They have accessed her phone records through legal channels, aiming to uncover more related information. The authorities are also seeking public assistance to locate her missing vehicle, considering it vital to the ongoing inquiry.
