On Friday, September 29, in Brookhaven, Georgia, concerns arose when a 48-year-old woman failed to attend a planned dinner with her daughter and could not be located.
Though her car was found parked at her apartment, her whereabouts remained unknown.
Aimee Lafakis was reported missing after family members informed the Brookhaven police that their last contact with her was through a text message received around 2 a.m. that day.
On Sunday, October 1, the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office reported finding a woman’s body on Drowning Creek Road in Gwinnett County, later identified as the missing woman.
Brandon Wineinger, 43, Lafakis’ ex-boyfriend, was arrested on September 30, a Saturday morning. He was charged with kidnapping, concealing the death of another, tampering with evidence, making false statements, and first-degree burglary. During his interview at the police headquarters, Wineinger provided several statements which the police later identified as false.
The Gwinnett County arrested Wineinger following interviews by the police with numerous family members and acquaintances of Lafakis.
Lafakis’ family emphasized her pride in her close family ties and the unique bond she shared with them.
