The college football game on October 14 between Northwestern State and Nicholls State, didn’t take place due to a Northwestern State player’s death in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
On October 12, 2023, Northwestern State’s defensive back, Ronnie Caldwell, aged 21, was fatally shot in his Natchitoches apartment complex. His lifeless body was found between two buildings by a police officer who arrived following multiple gunshots. Subsequent reports from local media confirmed Caldwell’s death.
Brad Laird, the head coach of Northwestern State, expressed his deep loss in a statement. Referring to Caldwell, he said, “Ronnie was an individual looking at a prosperous future. He was a guiding voice in our locker room. When he shared his thoughts, everyone took note.”
After moving from Tyler Junior College the previous year, Caldwell was involved in 11 matches with 42 tackles, starting ten for Northwestern State. A recent injury stopped him from participating this season, but he continued to be an instrumental figure, guiding the team in a coaching role.
The incident led to another announcement by Nicholls State President Marcus D. Jones, canceling the anticipated Family Day events in line with the football match.
Authorities are delving into the details of Caldwell’s death. Amidst this, Northwestern State is grieving, holding onto the memories of Caldwell’s remarkable contributions.
