Morgan State University, a historically Black college in Baltimore, Maryland, went into lockdown Tuesday night, October 3, 2023 after five students were shot on campus during homecoming week.
All five victims, aged between 18 and 22, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred around 9:25 p.m.
The university police were on patrol when the shooting took place. They immediately contacted Baltimore police for assistance. The initial response treated the incident as an active shooter situation, urging residents and students to remain indoors. By 11:45 pm, police announced that there was no longer an active threat.
By 12:30 am, the university lifted the lockdown and resumed shuttle services. City Council Member Ryan Dorsey mentioned the possibility of three shooters, although this has not been confirmed by the police.
Earlier in the day, the university had held an event to crown Mister and Miss Morgan State. University president David Wilson expressed his concern at a press conference, noting that students were transitioning from the event to the Student Center when the incident occurred.
The event disrupted the ongoing homecoming week celebrations. Consequently, the university canceled classes on Wednesday, October 4 and made counseling services available to students.
Local CBS station WJZ reported a bullet hole through a seventh-floor window in a freshman dormitory. While the shooting occurred outside, it is unclear whether the shots came from inside or outside the dorm.
Local authorities continue to investigate the incident, with preliminary evidence suggesting the possibility of a targeted attack. However, the exact motive and whether more than one shooter was involved remains to be determined.
