A 31-year-old swimmer from Savage, Maryland, was found dead at North Shores Beach, north of Rehoboth Beach, on Monday morning, September 4.
Richard Boateng had been reported missing the previous day after he was last seen in the surf near Rehoboth Avenue around 5:45 pm.
Following his disappearance, lifeguards, who had just finished their shifts, initiated a search in the water. Their efforts were soon joined by several agencies. The search continued late into Sunday, September 3.
By Monday, paramedics had found and identified a body as Boateng’s and confirmed his death. At this time, there is no suspicion of foul play.
Over the Labor Day weekend, rip-current warnings were issued in the mid-Atlantic region. This was due to the effects of Tropical Storm Idalia, which resulted in high surf conditions. Captain Jennifer Stockwell, commander of Coast Guard Sector Virginia, advised the public to exercise caution. She emphasized the importance of monitoring weather updates, understanding personal limits, and preparing for emergencies if choosing to enter the water.
