Keanu Reeves, the actor most famous for “The Matrix” films, and now “John Wick,” might not be returning to the movie franchise.
“John Wick: Chapter 4,” which was released in March, made a huge impact at the box office, earning $187.1 million domestically and $426.5 million worldwide. The film had a production budget of $100 million.
The producer, Basil Iwanyk, disclosed that Reeves had expressed interest in having his character meet an end in the fourth installment. The end of the movie left fans in suspense as John Wick’s character appears to die.
However, despite the inconclusive nature of John Wick’s fate, the producer remains hopeful. Iwanyk mentioned to Collider that there’s a slight chance, about 10%, that Reeves might take on the role once again.
Commenting on the intensity of the role and the toll it takes on Reeves, Iwanyk said, “After the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th movie, making these films is demanding. By the end of it, Keanu feels he can’t take it up again due to the physical and emotional strain.”
There’s a keen interest from the team in making another “John Wick” movie. However, Iwanyk stressed that they’d only proceed if they can develop a meaningful and fitting story. He emphasized that no one is interested in forcing another sequel without a proper storyline.
Reflecting on the camaraderie of the team, Iwanyk compared the dynamics among himself, Reeves, and characters like Winston (Ian McShane) and The Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) to the bond shared by the Beatles’ members. He expressed that they all have become close friends over the years and are pondering on how to work together again for a potential continuation of the story.
The future of the “John Wick” series remains uncertain. However, fans are eager to see if there’s more to the story of their favorite character.
