In Gwinnett County, Georgia five teenagers lost their lives when a car went over an overpass wall and landed on the interstate.
The accident unfolded near the meeting point of Interstate 85 and Georgia Route 316, in the vicinity of Pleasant Hill Road.
On the evening of September 4, Gwinnett Police confirmed the identities of the deceased: Katy Gaitan, 17, Ashley Gaitan, 16, and Coral Lorenzo, 17, all from Atlanta; Hung Nguyen, 18, from Lawrenceville; and Abner Santana, 19, from Suwanee.
Lakeside High School in DeKalb County was the academic home to three of the victims.
In addition to the loss of life, the accident, which encompassed three vehicles, led to three people sustaining injuries. The injured are currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital and have been declared stable.
Details from on-ground sources suggest that, in the early hours at about 3:45 am, a vehicle descended around 50 feet from Georgia Route 316, colliding with another vehicle on I-85 South. Several passengers were thrust out of the vehicle due to the force of the collision. All the deceased were passengers in the falling vehicle.
The investigation, according to Corporal Christian D’Allaird of the Gwinnett County Police Department, is ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the crash.
