A shooting occurred near a minor league baseball stadium in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on September 6. The incident left an 11-year-old boy dead and a woman with critical injuries due to gunshot wounds.
The incident happened at approximately 8:44 p.m. on Avenida Cesar Chavez, adjacent to University Blvd. The location was just outside the premises of the Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park.
As per the report from the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), the boy and his family had exited the baseball game and were in the process of leaving the area in their truck. Their truck moved in front of another vehicle. APD’s Chief Harold Medina shed light on the ensuing moments: The driver of the car which got cut off conducted a U-turn and, subsequently, someone from that car released 17 bullets targeting the family’s truck. The assailant(s) then fled the scene.
The shots inflicted fatal wounds on the young boy, while his aunt, in her 20’s, was immediately taken to University Hospital due to her serious condition.
The Albuquerque Isotopes, the minor league baseball team, were in the middle of their game when this took place. The on-site police officers, who were overseeing the game, responded to the crime scene. Reflecting on the events during a Thursday press briefing, Chief Medina described the emotional difficulty of encountering the child’s condition in the vehicle.
The scene is now an active investigation site for a specialized homicide team. No arrests have been made, and the APD calls on individuals with valuable information to contact them.
