As the situation escalated around 1:02 pm, an instinctive protective response was activated, with students and faculty members seeking immediate refuge. In a reassuring update, Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz confirmed the arrest of the alleged perpetrator within 90 minutes.
Tailei Qi, the 34-year-old doctoral student accused of the heinous act, was detained near the UNC campus. His academic lineage traces roots to Wuhan University in China, and he also holds a master’s from Louisiana State University.
UNC Police Chief Brian James is actively pursuing insights into the bond shared between the victim, who acted as Qi’s academic guide, and the shooter. The firearm, central to the crime, was not yet found.
Chancellor Guskiewicz, addressing the distraught UNC students and staff, stressed the imperative of restoring faith and ensuring safety.
