On the world-renowned Wonder of the Seas ship, currently the world’s largest cruise ship, a 19-year-old passenger, Sigmund Ropich, was reported overboard on August 29 during a trip from Port Canaveral, Florida, to Cuba, The voyage began on August 27. Sigmund was accompanied by his family and friends on the journey.
Royal Caribbean’s spokesperson verified that an immediate search was activated, involving the ship’s crew, U.S. officials, and local Cuban authorities. The intense search was visually documented by other passengers who uploaded videos on TikTok, portraying an active rescue boat near the vicinity of the cruise. For passenger awareness, announcements were regularly made over the ship’s PA system, and the vessel retraced its route to the point of the last sighting.
The family, in their moments of anxiety, received support from the U.S. Embassy in Cuba, which liaised with the Cuban Embassy, as shared by Savannah Ropich, Sigmund’s sister.
Known for his academic prowess and calm demeanor, Sigmund held a special place in his family’s heart.
The Coast Guard has plans to initiate a comprehensive investigation.
