Former President Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants are expected to surrender at Fulton County jail, according to a statement by the local sheriff on Tuesday, August 15.
The group faces charges related to the alleged subversion of the 2020 Georgia election. Despite the August 25 deadline set by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, Trump has yet to reveal his plans regarding the 13 counts against him, which include charges of racketeering.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that all 19 defendants are projected to be booked at the Rice Street Jail, according to guidance from the District Attorney’s office and the presiding judge.
The announcement stressed that defendants can voluntarily turn themselves in at any time, as the jail operates 24/7. This exceptional case may lead to sudden changes, as stated in the news release. Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat emphasized the equitable treatment of the defendants, echoing the usual practice of booking most defendants at Fulton County jail.
Negotiations are underway with the Secret Service and Trump’s legal team to organize the logistics of his surrender.
Indicted defendants who aren’t immediately arrested work out details like bail and terms of release with the District Attorney’s office.
Trump’s former attorney, Rudy Giuliani, voiced his intention to surrender to authorities next week, suggesting bail might be needed despite having cooperated voluntarily with authorities in the past.
The total 41-count indictment, unveiled on Monday, outlines a wide-ranging investigation into alleged efforts by Trump and his allies to undermine the 2020 election results in Georgia. Trump is accused of leading what prosecutors describe as a “criminal enterprise” that aimed to overturn his electoral loss.
The charges encompass various offenses, including false statements, solicitation, creation and distribution of false documents, election worker harassment, and obstruction.
Prominent figures like Rudy Giuliani, Attorney John Eastman, Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, and others are among the defendants. The indictment also lists 30 unindicted co-conspirators alongside the charged defendants.
Trump faces a total of 91 charges from all four separate recent indictments. He continues to deny any wrongdoing, attributing the cases to political motives.
