A 19-year-old from Strongsville, Ohio, was found guilty on all 12 charges she faced, including murder.
Mackenzie Shirilla, 19, intentionally crashed her car into a brick building at 100 mph, resulting in the deaths of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and a friend, Davion Flanagan, 19. Both died at the scene, while Shirilla was found unconscious, but later made a full recovery.
The incident occurred during the early morning hours of July 31, 2022.
On Monday, August 14, Judge Nancy Margaret Russo of the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court delivered the verdict. She concluded that Shirilla’s actions constituted murder rather than reckless driving.
Surveillance footage initially showed a calm scene as the car drove through the Progressive Avenue business park. However, upon reaching Alameda Drive, there was a sudden acceleration followed by deliberate and precise steering of the car into the building.
Prosecutors argued that Shirilla, who had allegedly smoked marijuana with the victims before the crash, was determined to end a turbulent relationship. The prosecution maintained that the intent was evident, leading to the loss of both passengers’ lives. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley emphasized the video evidence, showcasing a clear goal and no attempt to prevent the collision.
Judge Russo imposed a life sentence, with the possibility of parole after 15 years. Defense attorney James McDonnell contested the intent behind the crash.
The incident has left two families devastated by their loss. GoFundMe accounts have been established in memory of the victims.
