The NYPD is processing the loss of Officer Alexis Martinez, who fell victim to a presumed murder-suicide by his father on August 2.
The incident unfolded in the father’s Bronx dwelling at 12:45 pm. It’s believed that Martinez’s father, reportedly grappling with mental health issues, shot his son in the head while he was asleep before ending his own life.
Martinez, 26, who had been with the NYPD since 2018, was a member of the Bronx narcotics division and also participated in a baseball team with fellow officers. His uncharacteristic absence from a game led a colleague to check on him, revealing the tragic scene.
Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban shared a tribute video on Twitter. Additionally, Mayor Eric Adams conveyed his condolences through an online post.
A memoriam was held at the 34th Precinct in Washington Heights, with attendees participating in a balloon release.
Martinez’s commitment to his role and community was evident. His cousin, Felix Camacho, highlighted Martinez’s helpful nature.
The events leading up to the shooting are still being examined.
