On the morning of August 5, Dr. Krystal Cascetta, 40, and her four-month-old child were discovered deceased in their Westchester home. Preliminary findings indicate a murder-suicide. Dr. Cascetta died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Dr. Cascetta’s parents were in the home at the time and heard a noise upstairs. Thinking that something had fallen in the nursery they went to check and then heard the second shot. Breaking down the door, they found mother and baby dead. Dr. Cascetta and her husband, Tim Talty, 37, had been married for two years, having tied the knot in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, in 2019. The event transpired in the couple’s Somers, New York residence.
Professionally, Dr. Cascetta was associated with Mount Sinai Hospital, specializing in Hematology-Oncology with a focus on breast cancer research. Tim Talty is the proprietor of Talty Bars, a protein bar company, where Dr. Cascetta had offered her medical and scientific expertise.
A local resident recalled at least two prior emergency calls to the Cascetta residence. The case remains under investigation but sources say they are looking into severe post-partum depression, as a reason for the killings. 10-20% of new mothers suffer from PPD, but some may have the worst form – post-partum psychosis, a rare diagnosis where the mother may have thoughts of harming herself or her child.
