A disagreement over McDonald’s sweet and sour dipping sauce escalated into a deadly fight between two teenagers from Waldorf, Maryland.
Naima Liggon, a 16-year-old preparing to begin her academic year at Thomas Stone High School, lost her life as a result.
Detective Brendan Jasper of the Metropolitan Police Department reported that the incident took place after Liggon and the accused, also a 16-year-old girl, attended a party in Washington D.C. with three others. Following the party, the group stopped by a McDonald’s restaurant. The dispute over the dipping sauces they had been given ignited once they were back in the vehicle, leading the two teenagers to leave the car. During the ensuing altercation, Liggon was stabbed multiple times in the abdomen and chest.
Liggon was rushed to Howard University Hospital by the other members of the group, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The accused fled the scene on foot but was subsequently apprehended by the police, who found a black pocket knife in her possession.
Principal Shanif Pearl of Thomas Stone High School conveyed her grief in a letter to parents and staff, highlighting the tragic loss just before the commencement of a new academic year.
The defense for the accused proposed a 24/7 curfew instead of detention. However, the judge ruled in favor of her placement in a juvenile detention center. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for Friday, September 1.
