Following the onslaught of fierce storms sweeping through the Las Vegas Valley on Wednesday, August 23, one person has been successfully rescued, while two others remain missing, according to reports from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.
The tumultuous weather following Category 4 Hurricane Hilary led to two separate incidents, with downpours triggering floodwaters that surged through the area. Distress calls began at around 8:56 pm, alerting authorities to people stranded in drainage channels.
The Clark County Fire Department collaborated in the rescue efforts.
The first incident, occurring just before 9 pm, unfolded near the 200 block of East Flamingo Road. Law enforcement sources said that one person was successfully saved, while another woman is still unaccounted for.
The second scenario occurred around 9:30 pm, when reports surfaced about a man being swept away near Sahara Avenue from Lamb to Nellis Boulevard. However, authorities were unable to retrieve the man from the treacherous floodwaters.
Determined rescue crews continue to search for the two-missing people, and a concerned citizen has suggested the possibility of two more people being carried away by the deluge.
As the Las Vegas Strip and Henderson areas received a flood advisory, torrential rains, combined with thunder, lightning, and strong gusts of wind, wreaked havoc.
Records show that .15 of an inch of rain inundated Harry Reid International Airport, surpassing a 1982 record. A staggering 1.34 inches were recorded near Las Vegas Boulevard in just an hour.
