A Canadian figure skater who competed in the Winter Olympics in 2014 died in a multi-car accident this week in Melancthon Township, near Toronto.
The collision involved seven vehicles struck after a truck crashed into them at a construction zone.
Alexandra Paul, 31, was in one of the vehicles at the time. Her baby boy was also in the car and was transported to a children’s hospital, receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Currently, no charges have been filed against the truck’s driver. Three other individuals were also injured in the crash.
Skate Canada, in a statement on Instagram, described Paul as an individual who had left a significant mark on the world of figure skating.
Paul performed with her skating partner Mitchell Islam in the 2014 Winter Olympics. They married in 2021 and had a child the following year. Paul also earned a silver medal at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships in 2010 and retired from competitive figure skating in 2016.
Skate Canada recognized Paul’s contribution to the sport and her role as a model for up-and-coming skaters.
Meryl Davis, the U.S. gold medalist from the 2014 Olympics, spoke of Paul’s demeanor on and off the ice. “Alex had a grace about her that extended beyond the ice. She always exuded kindness and warmth,” Davis said.
The skating community and Paul’s family and friends are mourning her loss.
