An eight-year-old girl was fatally struck by a school bus on Wednesday morning, August 16, at around 7:18 am, while waiting to be picked up by a school bus.
The accident occurred in the southeast part of Wichita, Kansas, near the intersection of 47th Street South and Kansas Highway 15.
The girl, Harmoney Harper, was headed to Derby Elementary School. She was waiting at her designated bus stop with her brother.
As the two siblings waited for the bus, Harmoney walked into the street between two parked cars and was hit by a different Derby school bus that was traveling down the block, not the one she was waiting for.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the young girl could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the location.
Derby Public Schools Superintendent Heather Bohaty released a statement on the incident. “We are saddened by the loss of one of our students,” she said. “Students and staff will be supported by additional social workers from schools across our district.”
