A tragic incident occurred on August 3 when a boat, carrying 45 passengers from the city of Sfax in Tunisia, capsized in the Mediterranean Sea.
The unfortunate event led to the death of 41 migrants. Survivors, who were from Ivory Coast and Guinea, relayed the incident’s details to the Italian media.
Following the incident, four survivors were initially aided by a cargo ship and later by an Italian coast guard vessel, eventually reaching Lampedusa Island.
As per the data from Italy’s Interior Ministry, the number of migrants arriving in Italy by sea this year is approximately 93,700, with a notable percentage from Guinea and Ivory Coast.
In a separate event, a boat with 57 passengers from sub-Saharan African nations capsized in Tunisian waters. The Tunisian Coast Guard reported two survivors and 11 recovered bodies, leaving 44 unaccounted for. The Italian Premier has expressed intentions to work with the European Union to address smuggling operations from Tunisia, but so far there has been no success.
